How to Win a Street Fight
The world is a dangerous place, and you never know when you’ll have to defend yourself. What if you were walking home at night, and suddenly were attacked? Would you know how to defend yourself, or would you hand over your valuables in the hopes that the criminals wouldn’t do anything worse to you than take your money and run?
Most people don’t even think about having to defend themselves, until it’s a reality. By then it’s too late. Street fighting isn’t glorious either. Unlike the movies, where some hero flashes kicks all over the place, leaving an alley full of bad guys unconscious behind him, street fighting is dangerous and dirty. If you’re surrounded by six or seven thugs, chances are you’re going to lose...badly.
But how do you increase your chances against an opponent?
Carry a Weapon
You don’t have to carry a samurai sword under your jacket to increase your chances in a street fight. In fact, that’s illegal. However, you could invest in some pepper spray. Pepper spray will incapacitate an opponent for up to 45 minutes, which is more than enough time to escape and alert the authorities. They even make pepper spray in cans so small that they can fit on your keychain.
Self Defence Class
There are many types of self defence, but even a few street defence classes would improve your chances of winning a street fight. A self defence class would teach you a few holds and strikes that could save your life.
Martial Arts
Martial arts have been around for thousands of years. In fact, two thousand years ago, Shaolin monks were using Kung-fu to defend their monasteries and herds in China. The reason why martial arts are still found today is because it’s an effective defence against armed and unarmed opponents.
Kung-fu, Karate, Taekwondo, Judo and Jujitzu are among the most popular martial arts. Each one offers different things. For instance, Taekwondo uses kicks and an aggressive attack pattern to win a fight, while Kung-fu is a defence based art form. There are also martial art forms that are designed to be used in close quarters fighting, such as a small alley.
Fight to Win
Unlike a boxing or UFC arena, a street fight is about winning. There are no rules, and you’d be wise to remember that. To win a street fight, you have to be prepared to do what it takes to win. While some may call that dirty fighting, it works, and it may be the only thing that separates you from being raped, mugged or beaten.
Go for the Soft Spots
If you suddenly find yourself in a street fight, attack an opponent’s soft spots. Neck, eyes, kidneys, point of the jaw and sex organs are all areas of the body that if hit hard enough, will incapacitate an opponent quickly.
The Element of Surprise
The element of surprise can be your best friend in a street fight. Doing something your opponent doesn’t expect can win you the fight, and ensure your safety. For example, if given the opportunity, you could possibly head butt your opponent at close quarters. In most cases, your attacker won’t expect it, and thus be unprepared. Break their finger if they grab you, bite, scratch or gouge. Remember, you have to do whatever it takes to win a street fight.
Keep Your Opponents in Sight
If you’re forced to fight more than one opponent at a time, try to use your terrain to your advantage. Never allow one to get behind you, and try not to allow them to flank you. It’s also in your best interest to try and take out the most dangerous of them, but in many cases, they may be hard to identify.
Go for the Nose
The bones of the nose are one of the easiest to break. Also, even if your strike to the nose lands, but doesn’t break your opponents nose, their eyes will likely tear, making it harder for them to see, which can be a huge advantage in your favour.
Street fights are inglorious affairs, and should be avoided if possible. However, in some cases they’re unavoidable. If you find yourself in a street fight, use the tips above to increase your chances of winning.
